This has been a very busy summer for me and it is good to get back to my blog.

How was your summer? 

Did you go to concert and really enjoy the performance?  Did you attend a conference and felt that it was worth your investment of time and money?  Or, perhaps did you leave the conference knowing that you received more than you expected?

Have you ever thought about what it takes to make a performance or conference a success?

I can think of several things that are common to the success of every event or project.  They are planning, commitment, and teamwork. 

The first is planning.  I have been involved in planning many events from community fundraising projects to state wide conferences.   And there’s no doubt that planning was a major factor in the success of each event. 

Planning often starts six to twelve months in advance of the event.  Meetings are held and committees are tasked with the various parts that make up the event.  Everyone knows what they’re responsible for in order to make the event successful.

This is where commitment becomes critical.  Whether the event is large or small, it can still take many months of hard work behind the scenes.  During that time, everyone involved must be totally committed the project for it to be successful. 

However, good planning and total commitment aren’t enough.  You must have a great team in order to be successful.  And it takes everyone’s commitment and participation to make the plans work.

The next time you attend a performance or convention, take the time to observe how planning, commitment, and teamwork are vital to the success of the event.  I did that at a recent Neil Diamond concert.

While I was sitting in the arena waiting for the concert to begin, it was easy to see how well planned the event was.  Lighting, sound, computers, stage props, and musical instruments were all ready when Neil Diamond took center stage.  

Everyone did their part and the performance was a success.  Another great Neil Diamond concert!  And it couldn’t have happened if he didn’t have a good plan and a committed team to support him.

What about your next project or event?  Are your plans well prepared?  Does everyone have the commitment to do whatever it takes to achieve the outcome?  And, do you have the right team assembled to ensure the success of your project?

If you have proper planning, total commitment, and excellent teamwork, you can achieve your goals!

While I have been providing coaching and mentoring services to professionals and entrepreneurs for quite some time, I found the need to make improvements to my web site.  Now that I have completed making the updates to my website, I would like to share what I learned from this experience with you.

What do you do when you encounter a major project like improving a website?  First there is the plan, the time line, the budget, do I need a new web host, do I need a new domain name, and what do I want to add to the pages.  Then, do I need to re-write any of the pages.  How should it be displayed?  And should we change the header. 

We get very excited about the prospects of having the new improvements in place and we make a lot of progress at first.  Then the urge for perfection sets in.  We want our web site to be perfect, it has to be just so.  Why not, it is our website.  It has to be right.  As a result of the urge for perfection, we delay the revision while we get mired in little changes.  What happens next?  The release date gets pushed back again.

Does this sound familiar? If you are like most people, this can occur in many areas of your life.  We all are candidates for the urge for perfection and it can be hard to resist.  We ask ourselves, can we resist this urge? Or should we?   The answer is YES.  If we want to succeed, we must resist the urge for perfection.  We need to take action now.  Remember, we can not see the results of our actions until we complete the task.  Also, remember that we can always make revisions once the task is complete.

Therefore, whenever the urge for perfection starts to emerge in any area of your life; ask if you can afford to not to complete the task while you are perfecting it.  What will you loose by not completing the task?  What great opportunity will you miss?  Or, how much money could your business loose as a result of seeking perfection?

The cost of perfection can be great.  Often we will not even know how much we have lost, thus giving us a false sense of having made the right choice in seeking perfection.

Remember, if you want to succeed you need to take action and take action NOW.  You will achieve your goals sooner as a result of taking action and by achieving your goals quickly, you will find the motivation to seek and achieve even larger goals.
